The EIFL Public Library Innovation Programme (EIFL-PLIP) has completed a series of‘ ‘Small Bites’ training videos for public librarians and public library trainers on the topic of public library performance and outcome evaluation.
The completed series comprises three short videos each focused on a different aspect of the topic: community needs assessment, public library service / project outcome evaluation, and evidence-based storytelling to demonstrate the impact of services and projects. The presenter is Ugne Lipeikaite, EIFL-PLIP Impact Manager.
The three videos are based on EIFL-PLIP’s training materials and practical experience of fostering development of technology-based services in public libraries in African countries. Video content includes real-life examples from public libraries in Ghana (mobile library ICT classes for children in rural schools); Uganda (ICT training for women and youth); and Zambia (creative space in a public library for young people to co-create and build their creative skills).
The videos aim to build librarians’ capacity to develop services that meet real community needs; to evaluate how well services meet these needs, and how to use evaluation data to demonstrate achievements to local government officials, funders, partners and communities.

In creating the videos the EIFL-PLIP team was guided by micro-learning methodology, a relatively new approach in the e-learning field. The methodology breaks learning content into small chunks, or units, and creates learning resources focused on a specific practical issue or learning outcome. The aim is to create a quick but complete learning experience that enables learners to grasp and apply knowledge immediately.
