Eduardo Mondlane University scientific journals platform

EIFL support for project to strengthen no-fee open access publishing in Africa

Eduardo Mondlane University (Universidade Eduardo Mondlane - UEM) - in Maputo, Mozambique, has initiated a project to improve its journal publishing platform, UEM Scientific Journals (Revistas Científicas da UEM (RC-UEM).

The UEM Scientific Journals platform hosts four peer reviewed no-fee open access journals, which it publishes biannually, in May and November each year. The main objective of the platform is to disseminate the results of scientific activities carried out by faculty and researchers from UEM and other higher education institutions in Mozambique. The project will specifically work with and support the Social Sciences and Humanities journal, Revista Científica da UEM: Série Letras e Ciências Sociais.

Currently, the server that hosts the journal belongs to another UEM unit, and journal managers and editors have little control over its operation. Journal editors and reviewers need training on reviewing, editing and publishing a journal, and technical editors need training to manage the Open Journal Systems (OJS) software and workflows to cover all journal production steps, from submission to reviewing and publishing.

The ‘Improvement of the Eduardo Mondlane University scientific journals platform’ project is one of 17 projects that have received grant support through a three-year project to strengthen no-fee open access publishing in Africa implemented by EIFL, AJOL (African Journals Online) and WACREN (the West and Central African Research and Education Network), with funding from Wellcome.
